Driver of stolen car dies in crash early New Year’s Day

Portland police responded Sunday to the first fatal car crash of 2023 in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The new year is off to a deadly start in the Rose City with Portland police responding to the first fatal crash of the year early Sunday morning. It happened in a small, dead-end neighborhood off Southeast Division Street around 2:30 a.m.

“People love to just come flying into the neighborhood or flying out of the neighborhood,” said Don Reynolds, who has lived on Southeast 125th Avenue for 10 years. He was hitting the road early to go snowboarding when he heard the crash. “I thought it was nothing but fireworks but as I left there were still flares on the road.”

Portland police said someone driving a stolen Sedan crashed into multiple parked cars and died. The damaged cars still lined the street Sunday afternoon.

“People would assume something on I-84 or something on I-5, but when you say it’s a dead-end neighborhood and that there was a fatal crash that hurts a lot,” said Reynolds, who said he’s considering moving out of Portland because of the crash and increased crime in the area. “It seems that people just don’t care.”

This deadly crash came on the heels of last year, when more than 65 people died in Portland in car crashes. Police are now calling it an epidemic. According to Oregon’s official crash record, there are typically between 10,000 and 12,000 reported crashes in the city each year.

“Speed continues to be one of the key factors in those fatalities and serious injuries,” said Hannah Schafer at the Portland Bureau of Transportation. She said a new state law could help stop the deadly trend.

The law, which is now in effect, allows city and county officials to designate speed limits as opposed to traffic engineers and Oregon’s Department of Transportation. “There is still a lot of work for us to do at PBOT to make our streets safer, but we need partners in this,” Schafer said.

Oregon’s 241 cities, along with Multnomah and Clackamas counties, can now begin applying for the authority to designate speed limits in their respective jurisdictions. ODOT will continue to manage speed limits on state roads.

“Having local authority over speeds is really, really crucial when we’re trying to lower speeds and create safer conditions around the city,” Schafer said.

It’s those safer conditions that people like Reynolds are longing for as they head into the new year. “I would hope that Portland would just really take that step on becoming what it used to be,” Reynolds said.

Portland police are calling on the community to help make the streets safer by being vigilant and following the rules of the road. They are also asking anyone with information on Sunday’s fatal crash on Southeast 125th Avenue to contact them at crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and reference case number 23-47.

Jets face Seahawks with playoff hopes at stake for both

NEW YORK JETS (7-8) at SEATTLE (7-8)

Sunday, 1:05 p.m. PST, FOX

FANDUEL SPORTSBOOK NFL LINE: Jets by 1½.

AGAINST THE SPREAD: Jets 8-7; Seahawks 6-9.

SERIES RECORD: Seahawks lead 12-8.

LAST MEETING: Seahawks beat Jets 40-3, Dec. 13, 2020, in Seattle.

LAST WEEK: Jets lost to Jaguars 19-3; Seahawks lost to Chiefs 24-10.

JETS OFFENSE: OVERALL (21), RUSH (24), PASS (14), SCORING (25).

JETS DEFENSE: OVERALL (3), RUSH (11), PASS (5), SCORING (4).

SEAHAWKS OFFENSE: OVERALL (13), RUSH (21), PASS (11), SCORING (9T).

SEAHAWKS DEFENSE: OVERALL (29), RUSH (31), PASS (17), SCORING (29).

TURNOVER DIFFERENTIAL: Jets minus-4; Seahawks even.

JETS PLAYER TO WATCH: QB Mike White. After being sidelined two games because of fractured ribs, White returns as the Jets starter after being cleared for contact by doctors. New York’s offense has been at its most efficient with White under center, but the banged-up offensive line will need to be on its game to protect the quarterback.

SEAHAWKS PLAYER TO WATCH: It has to be QB Geno Smith facing the team that drafted him for the first time in his career. The rocky start to Smith’s career in New York cast a narrative that has followed him throughout his tenure as a backup and framed his resurgence this season with Seattle. He must play better than he has recently as mistakes have crept up during Seattle’s slide.

KEY MATCHUP: Seattle’s offense has been in a slump, scoring 13 points in its loss to San Francisco and just 10 last week against Kansas City. That included three drives into Chiefs territory where Seattle failed to get points. Now comes a Jets defense that has been stellar for most of the season. Seattle has to find success running the ball and be better on third downs than its 2-for-14 performance against the Chiefs.

KEY INJURIES: WR Denzel Mims was close to being cleared from the concussion protocol and was likely to play. … S Lamarcus Joyner should return from a hip injury that sidelined him the past two games. … Seattle will be without TE Will Dissly after he was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. The Seahawks are hopeful WR Tyler Lockett (hand surgery) will be able to play. Same goes for RT Abraham Lucas (knee) and DT Al Woods (Achilles).

SERIES NOTES: The Seahawks have won four straight in the series, including a 40-3 thumping of the Jets played in an empty stadium back in 2020 in Seattle. The previous win by the Jets came in 2004 and capped five straight wins by New York over Seattle.

STATS AND STUFF: The Jets are on a four-game losing streak, their longest skid in coach Robert Saleh’s two-year tenure. … New York is trying to avoid its first five-game skid since 2020, when the Jets opened the season by losing their first 13 games. … Despite their recent slump, the Jets can still make the playoffs if they win their final two games (at Seattle and Miami) and New England loses one of its last two (home vs. Miami and at Buffalo). … In three starts this season, White is 80 of 129 (62%) for 952 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions and an 85.8% quarterback rating. … After a hot start during which undrafted rookie RB Zonovan Knight ran for 230 yards on 46 carries in his first three games, he has been held to just 21 yards on 19 attempts in his past two. … WR Garrett Wilson has the most receptions (71) and yards receiving (996) by a rookie in franchise history. He leads NFL rookies in both categories. Wilson is 4 yards away from having the 26th 1,000-yard receiving season in franchise history, and first since Brandon Marshall (1,502) and Eric Decker (1,027) in 2015. … DT Quinnen Williams, a first-time Pro Bowl selection, has a career-high 12 sacks this season and 27½ for his career. That’s the second-most sacks by a Jets player through his first 55 games since the stat began to be recorded, according to TruMedia. John Abraham has the most with 43½. … CB Sauce Gardner joined Seahawks CB Tariq Woolen as the only rookies this season to be selected to the Pro Bowl. Gardner leads the NFL with 16 passes defensed. Woolen is tied for the NFL lead with six interceptions. … The Seahawks have lost three straight at home for the second straight season. They have not lost four straight home games in a single season since 2008. … Seattle can still make the playoffs winning its final two games and getting one loss by Washington. … Seahawks QB Geno Smith was a second-round pick by the Jets in 2013 out of West Virginia. Smith threw for 5,962 yards and 28 TDs with 36 INTs in 33 games, including 30 starts, for the Jets from 2013-16. … RB Kenneth Walker III rushed for 107 yards last week vs. Kansas City, his first 100-yard game since Week 9. … WR DK Metcalf has a career-high 86 receptions on the season and has topped 1,000 yards receiving for the second time. … DE Darrell Taylor has sacks in three of his past four games and is second on the team with six on the season. … DE Uchenna Nwosu needs one sack to reach double figures for the first time in his career. … The Seahawks have not forced a turnover in the past three games.

FANTASY TIP: If Lockett is able to play it will be an entertaining matchup between Jets’ cornerbacks Gardner and D.J. Reed, and the Seattle combo of Lockett and Metcalf. Considering how the two cornerbacks have been able to limit some top pass catchers this season, it might be wise to avoid the Seattle duo for this game.

Police attacked by man with machete near Times Square on New Year’s Eve

NEW YORK (PIX11) — Three NYPD officers were attacked by a machete-wielding assailant who was swiftly shot by police near Times Square on New Year’s Eve, officials said.

A 19-year-old assailant attacked three police officers at West 52nd Street and Eighth Avenue around 10:11 p.m., according to Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell.

Unprovoked, the assailant approached an NYPD officer and tried to hit the officer in the head with the machete, Sewell said. The assailant then struck two more NYPD officers in the head with the machete.

“One officer — an eight-year veteran — suffered a laceration to the head. The second officer — who graduated the police academy on Friday — was also struck in the head, resulting in a skull fracture and large laceration,” Sewell said.

One of the officers then fired their gun at the assailant, striking the 19-year-old in the shoulder, officials said.

All three officers were hospitalized in stable condition, Sewell said. The assailant was also taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries.

The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is working with the NYPD to determine the nature of the attack.

“We believe this was a sole individual at this time,” said Mike Driscoll, assistant director in charge of the New York Field Office. “We’re not aware of any ongoing threat.”

The officers who were attacked were assigned to New Year’s Eve security. However, the attack occurred outside the area that was being screened for the gathering in Times Square, according to Mayor Eric Adams.

The Detectives’ Endowment Association, the labor union representing NYPD detectives, released a statement Saturday evening.

“Detectives and fellow cops face grave danger every day, and #NewYearsEve is no different. They’re courageously fighting violence across the city — including the NYPD officers who were assaulted tonight and fortunately recovering,” the Detectives’ Endowment Association statement read.

Another stabbing occurred near Times Square earlier Saturday morning. A man was stabbed multiple times on the corner of Seventh Avenue and West 40th Street around 11 a.m., according to the NYPD.

The suspect in that stabbing hadn’t been arrested. Investigators didn’t say what led up to the attack. The victim was expected to survive his injuries.

Here are the new Oregon laws that go into effect Jan. 1

Four of the upcoming laws are aimed at improving working conditions for Oregonians, starting with two pieces of legislation that update the state’s workers’ compensation laws. One of them broadens the scope of who can be claimed as a dependent, and the other requires employers to notify employees in writing when their disability benefits are going to end.

Two other labor-related bills made it through the legislature this year: One that puts new restrictions on the use of nondisclosure agreements and another that protects the right of employees at bakeries or tortilla manufacturers to refuse to work mandatory overtime on short notice.

Investigators suspect arson in fire at Bank of America on Hawthorne

Portland Fire & Rescue crews called for a second alarm as they worked inside the building to extinguish the fire.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Firefighters from Portland Fire & Rescue responded overnight to a commercial fire in Southeast Portland, successfully containing it from spreading beyond the building.

The agency said that crews responded just before 3:15 a.m. for reports of a commercial fire near SE 37th Avenue and SE Hawthorne Boulevard. Photos from the scene showed that this was the Bank of America building, which sits just across SE 38th from Fred Meyer.

PF&R’s first company to arrive at the scene reported seeing smoke coming from the front door of the one-story building. Fire crews soon called in police to act as traffic control.

Once inside the bank, firefighters reported encountering multiple hot spots, as well as a basement that the fire had not yet reached. Crews are able to use a ladder to access the roof, looking for signs of the fire’s spread.

While firefighters continued to work inside the building, the company called for a second alarm to get more assistance with extinguishing the flames.

PF&R said that crews successfully knocked the fire down and recalled the incident around 4:30 a.m. Some crews remained on the scene, while the companies that had responded as part of the second alarm returned to their quarters.

The fire’s cause is still under investigation by the Portland Fire Investigations Unit, PF&R said, however Portland police confirmed that it is being investigated as arson.

An initial statement from PF&R did not estimate how much damage the fire caused before it was extinguished.

This is a developing story and will be updated with more details as they emerge.

Defending champ Georgia vs. Cinderella TCU for CFP title

After the best semifinal day in the nine-year history of the College Football Playoff, the title game will match the defending national champion against the closest thing the sport has had in years to a Cinderella team.

It will be No. 1 Georgia (14-0) looking for its second straight championship against upstart and No. 3 TCU on Jan. 9 at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The four-team playoff has been littered with lopsided semifinal games, but Saturday — and into early Sunday and the new year — delivered two thrillers and a combined 179 points.

The Bulldogs came from 14 points down in the second half to beat No. 4 Ohio State 42-41 in the Peach Bowl and advance to the CFP championship game for the third time under coach Kirby Smart.

The Bulldogs and Buckeyes played a classic that came down to a missed field goal by Ohio State with three seconds left. Amazingly, it was even better than the wild opener of the semifinal doubleheader between No. 3 TCU and No. 2 Michigan.

The Horned Frogs (13-1) upset the Wolverines 51-45 in the Fiesta Bowl, the second-highest scoring CFP game ever.

“We’re going to celebrate it,” TCU quarterback Max Duggan said. “Obviously, we’re excited, but we know we got a big one coming up.”

TCU, the first Big 12 to win a playoff game, will be looking for its first national title since 1938 in a season it started unranked.

The Southeastern Conference champion Bulldogs opened as a 13 1/2-point favorites, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, in what will be the fifth meeting between the schools.

Georgia has won them all, including the last in the 2016 Liberty Bowl.

Coming off a losing 2021 season and picked to finish seventh in their conference before the season, the Horned Frogs have embraced the underdog role and thrived on the being doubted.

“We know we’re going to hear it again. It’s not going to stop now,” first-year coach Sonny Dykes said. “We got to do what we did this game (against Michigan). We’ve got to answer that criticism and show up and do what we’re supposed to do.

“If we think that’s going away, I think you guys all know that’s not. That’s just the way it is.”

Georgia, No. 1 for most of the season, is looking for its third national title, trying to become the first back-to-back champions in the CFP era and the first since Alabama won the BCS in 2011 and ’12.

It will be a matchup Heisman Trophy finalist quarterbacks, with Duggan and Georgia’s Stetson Bennett.

Neither is a future first-rounder, and both had ups and down in the semifinal but came through in the biggest spots.

Duggan ran for two scores and threw two TD passes as the Frogs held back a surging Michigan in the second half.

Bennett threw for 398 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner with 54 seconds left.

These Bulldogs rely more on Bennett and their offense than last year’s championship team, which fielded one of the best defenses college football has had in recent history. Georgia ranked fifth in the nation in yards per play (6.97) coming into the playoff.

The Frogs have have a powerful offense, too, with Duggan and star receiver Quentin Johnston, who had 163 yards on six catches against the Wolverines.

This is the penultimate season of the four-team version of the playoff before it expands to 12 teams in the 2024 season.

Before Saturday, only three of 16 semifinals had been decided by single-digits, and all those blowouts helped fuel a desire to grow the field in the hope of creating some more interesting postseason games.

This New Year’s Eve, the four-team playoff turned out to be an eight-hour college football party.
