Hwy 26 reopens in both directions after power lines fall

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — As wintry weather moves through the region, drivers already feel the impacts early Wednesday morning.

The Oregon Department of Transportation reopened both directions of Highway 26 after it closed from Interstate 405 to Sylvan due to fallen power lines. The closure, which was less than an hour long, created a significant backup.

Crews managed to clear the roadway and reopen it shortly after 6:30 a.m.

Drivers can keep up with traffic delays using TripCheck. As rain hits the Willamette Valley and snow sweeps across the Gorge, officials urge drivers to be cautious.

End-of-season review: On the whole, the Ducks were very good in 2022

Sometimes when you’re in the heat of the battle, it’s difficult to keep the big picture in mind. Yes, the Ducks should have beaten Washington and Oregon State. Yes, they should be preparing to play No. 4 USC for the Pac-12 title.

But considering where Oregon was at this time last year, going 9-3 with a possible trip to the Holiday Bowl, and an incredible recruiting class poised to sign. the Ducks are in a very good spot and they’ll be a player on the national stage soon enough.

Buy Ducks Tickets

Despite those two disappointments, there were a ton of exciting games and individual performances that will go down in the history of Oregon football. We also had some breakout stars, and some great transfers, including a senior quarterback that showed how tough he really is in a win over the defending Pac-12 champs.

The Ducks also had to endure some growing pains with a first-time head coach. Questionable decisions, playcalling, and Pac-12 refs (calling them questionable is generous) all contributed to Oregon’s nine wins and three losses.

We break it all down here as we take a deep dive into what was the 2022 Oregon Ducks football regular season.

Quarterback

Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

Grade: A+

It’s easy to say that Bo Nix is the greatest senior transfer Oregon has ever brought in. The Ducks have a history of mixed results when it comes to QB transfers, but Nix was simply incredible. Before he was injured in the Washington game, Nix was on track to being a Heisman finalist.

Overall, Nix completed 71.5 percent of his passes and threw for 27 touchdowns to just six interceptions. He also rushed for 14 more scores, the most rushing touchdowns by a Duck quarterback since Marcus Mariota.

Oregon is set to bring in the No. 2 QB recruit in the country in Dante Moore to replace Nix, but with one more year of eligibility available to him, there are not many Duck fans who wouldn’t welcome Nix back for 2023.

Running Backs

Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

Grade: B+

Considering neither Bucky Irving or Noah Whittington had not carried the ball one time for the Ducks before 2022, these two turned out to be great additions to the football program.

Irving just missed the 1,000-yard mark with 909 total yards, averaging 6.4 yards per carry, and scored three times. He also showed a nice ability to catch the ball out of the backfield with 30 catches, 300 yards, and three more scores.

Whittington gained 752 yards and rushed for five touchdowns, completing a solid 1-2 punch for the Ducks at the tailback position. Both he and Irving are sophomores and are expected back in 2023.

Jordan James, a highly-touted recruit from Tennessee, managed to get 43 carries and scored five times. He was Oregon’s goal line runner not named Bo Nix. He has a bright future ahead of him. The Ducks are also bringing in highly-touted recruit Dante Dowdell, so Oregon might have an embarrassment of riches at running back in 2023.

Wide Recievers/Tight End

Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

Grade: A

How fun was it to see the emergence of Troy Franklin? The sophomore turned into one of the best receivers in the conference. Franklin had 56 catches for 867 yards (72 ypg) and eight touchdowns.

But it wasn’t just Franklin. Chase Cota had a successful homecoming after wasting away at UCLA. Cota missed three games and still managed to catch 33 passes for 455 and two touchdowns, including a circus catch for a score against the Beavers.

Kris Hutson also came into his own. He was second on the team with 42 catches for 462 yards.

As far as tight ends go, it was definitely a group effort between Terrance Ferguson, Cam McCormick, Moliki Matavao and Patrick Herbert. Those four combined for 51 catches for 593 yards and 10 touchdowns. All except for McCormick, a senior, should return for 2023

Offensive line

Grade: A-

If this group had been able to stay healthy for the entire season, a tough task we know, the grade would be even better. Still, the Oregon offensive line was one of the best in the conference and in the country. They kept Bo Nix upright all season long and were able to push back opposing defensive lines consistently.

Unfortunately, injuries took their toll and really showed up in the second half of the Oregon State game where for the first time the line was ineffective. The inability to get the game-winning touchdown with four tries from the 5-yard line was a glaring lowlight of that game. But all in all, the offensive line was really, really good for Oregon, and considering how well the Ducks are recruiting in this area, the line will be a strength for some time to come.

Defensive line

Ben Lonergan/The Register-Guard / USA TODAY NETWORK

Grade: B-

Oregon’s defensive line was a good group and should become even better in 2023. They helped hold opponents to just 125 rushing yards a game and that number would have been even better without OSU’s 270 yards in the regular season finale.

Brandon Dorlus and DJ Johnson both have a good chance of being all-conference performers.  Dorlus had 34 tackles, nine for loss and 2.5 sacks at the nose tackle position. Johnson found a home as an edge rusher with 39 tackles, 8.5 for loss and six sacks.

Linebackers

Ali Gradischer/Getty Images

Grade: C

This was the group that had the toughest time adjusting to the new defensive scheme. Noah Sewell still had 56 tackles, but he wasn’t the dominating, take-over-a-game defensive player he has been in the past. Sewell will still play on Sundays next season should he choose to, but one has to wonder how much his stock would go up if he stayed and played under Lanning’s system for another year.

Jeffrey Bassa was the breakout star of the group and was second on the team with 56 tackles, three for loss and a sack.

But for whatever reason, players such as Mase Funa and Justin Flowe could never get on track with this defense. One can only hope with another offseason and spring practices, those talented players will come into their own in 2023.

Secondary

Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

Grade: B

As big as Bo Nix’s arrival was to the offense, Christian Gonzalez transferring to Oregon was just as important. The Ducks knew he was good at Colorado, but in Eugene, Gonzalez took it up a notch. With his 50 tackles, four picks and seven pass breakups, it will be a shock if Gonzalez wasn’t a Pac-12 First-Teamer.

He also mentored the likes of Trikweze Bridges (three picks), Bryan Addison (two picks), Jahlil Florence and the rest of the secondary. Except for the Washington game, the secondary was very good. Safety Bennett Williams led the team with 67 tackles and had two interceptions.

Special Teams

Tom Hauck/Getty Images

Grade: D

The grade has nothing to do with kicker Camden Lewis, who was nearly perfect with 14-of-15 on field goals. The only one he missed was a 53-yarder that was just out of his range. He probably should have utilized a lot more.

But the rest of the special teams were not special. Oregon may not overestimate not having a quality punter ever again. Unfortunately, the Ducks lost Tom Snee in spring ball and never found an adequate replacement for him and it hurt. Oregon went through three punters where no one particularly stood out.  Andrew Boyle was a very good kickoff specialist with 50 touchbacks, however.

The punt and kickoff returners were something to be desired though. As a team, the Ducks averaged five yards a punt return. Hutson had the longest return of 21 yards. Hutson also returned most of the kickoffs and averaged just over 21 yards. This is something Lanning needs to address. With all of the athletes on the roster, there has to be a great returner in there somewhere.

Overall Grade

Ben Lonergan/The Register-Guard / USA TODAY NETWORK

Grade: B

For a first-year and first-time head coach, this grade is a good one. Before the season, nearly everyone would take a 9-3 record in a heartbeat. But those losses to Washington and Oregon State, their two main rivals, really stick out like a sore thumb and the Ducks were a very slim margin from going 11-1.

It would be one thing if the Huskies and Beavers were just better at this point of time, but they’re not. Everyone in the Ducks program will say they let those games slip away. Oregon is just a couple of plays here and there to be preparing for the Pac-12 title against USC with the winner probably going to the College Football Playoff.

Considering where they were just a year ago, that’s an incredible improvement and there’s no reason to think Oregon’s trajectory won’t keep from going up.

Top Performer not named Bo Nix

Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

WR Troy Franklin

Quarterback Bo Nix was hands down Oregon’s top performer for the 2022 season, so we wanted to recognize someone else who had an outstanding year in Eugene. That distinction goes to sophomore receiver Troy Franklin, who broke out as a star.

The 6-foot-3, 178-pounder from East Palo Alto, Calif. showed that he can be a possession receiver and a deep threat. He led the Ducks with 56 catches, 867 yards (72 ypg), and eight touchdowns. Franklin caught just 18 balls for two scores last season, so the improvement was awesome and with another year of eligibility remaining, 2023 should be an even better year for him.

Biggest Surprise

Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

RBs Bucky Irving/Noah Whittingham

Not many Oregon fans knew who Bucky Irving was when he came out for the first offensive series against Georgia. They all know him and Noah Whittington now.

It was assumed Byron Cardwell, who had a nice freshman season last year, would receive the bulk of the carries in 2022. Now Cardwell is an afterthought and will transfer.

Irving, who came to Oregon via Minnesota, led the Ducks in rushing with 909 yards and scored three times. He also proved to be a very good receiver out of the backfield.

As for Whittington, the transfer from Western Kentucky, gained 752 yards and found the end zone five times. Both of them found a good home in Eugene and both will be juniors in 2023.

Best single game performance

Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

Bo Nix vs Utah

We could have gone with a number of Nix’s great games such as scoring six times throwing for 412 yards at California or going 22-of-28 for 282 yards and five touchdowns against UCLA.

But his game against Utah was something of legend and will be remembered in Oregon history for quite some time. Just being on the field after sustaining a major ankle injury the week before was in itself a minor miracle.

Offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham’s revised game plan to protect Nix at all cost also helped out tremendously. And this wasn’t against a cupcake. This was against No. 10 Utah and the defending conference champs on national television.

Nix willed his team to a victory. He was 25-of-37 for 282 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a first down on the last drive to seal the win.

Player who we need to see more from

Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

LB Justin Flowe

The picture above was from Flowe’s debut a year ago where he racked up 14 tackles and a forced fumble against Fresno State. Then he got hurt and for some reason, he’s never come close to putting a game like that together again.

Whether it was injuries or not gelling with the new defensive scheme, Flowe was oftentimes a complete non-factor. As one of the highest rated recruits to ever commit to Oregon, a season with just 35 tackles and 2.5 for loss and no sacks isn’t good enough. He needs to be better.

The frustrating part is that Flowe has showed he can be dominating and hopefully with a healthy offseason and more time deciphering the Duck scheme, Flowe can finally turn into the player we all expect him to be in 2023. Oregon needs him and he needs it to turnaround his career if he ever wants to play on Sundays in the not-to-distant future.

Hearing on Multnomah County's proposed flavored tobacco ban draws testimony from dozens

County commissioners took public input Monday night on their proposal to ban flavored tobacco products, which could come up for a vote on Thursday.

PORTLAND, Ore. — It was a packed house Monday night at the Multnomah Building. County commissioners heard testimony from over 80 people as people made their voices heard at a public hearing on the county’s proposed ban on the sale of flavored tobacco and nicotine products, including e-cigarettes and vapes.

“Well we know these are deadly products, and we know they are marketed in a way by the tobacco industry to hook kids on a lifetime of addiction,” said Ruth Adkins.

Adkins and others from the “Flavors Hook Oregon Kids Coalition” came to speak in support of the ban. They say that for too long the tobacco industry has targeted youth, especially kids of color.

“The fastest growing population of children in the state of Oregon and the city of Portland are kids of color,” said Marcus Mundy with The Coalition of Communities of Color. “I would tell Multnomah County if they care about the kids in Multnomah County, they would vote to ban the sale of menthol and tobacco products.”

But opponents of the ban disagree. Brian Graham owns a tobacco shop in SE Portland. He argues that the ban will create a black market for these products and just hurt small businesses.

“I have been selling tobacco in Multnomah County for 18 years, this is my passion and my livelihood,” said Graham “I have three families that work for me, they’ve all worked for me over a decade they would probably lose their livelihoods and I’d have to close up shop.”

Multnomah County isn’t the only one making this move. Last year, Washington County voted to ban the sale of flavored tobacco. In September, a circuit judge overturned the ban, but the county is appealing.

In Multnomah County, supporters aren’t phased.

“We’re confident that the judge’s ruling will be overturned and Multnomah County is on firm legal ground to proceed with its own policy,” said Adkins.

At the same time, opponents vow to take on the policy — in court, if need be.

The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners could vote on the proposal when they take it up again this Thursday morning. People can still submit written comments online.

Timberline opens lifts again; Meadows discusses plans to open

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – After closing its Bruno and Pucci lifts in mid-November due to a lack of snow, Timberline Lodge and Ski Area announced Monday morning it will be opening the two lifts again.

In the last 24 hours, Timberline received 15 inches of new snow. The base depth at the lodge is now up to 35 inches.

KOIN Meteorologist Steve Pierce said a winter storm warning is in effect for the Cascades Monday morning that could bring another 15-20 inches of snow to elevations at and above the passes. The winter storm warning is in effect at Government Camp until 10 a.m. Monday.

Timberline warned any skiers or snowboarders planning to head to the mountain to be prepared for winter driving. The National Weather Service said drivers should plan for slippery road conditions and should pack an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicle in case of emergency.

Dave Tragethon, vice president of marketing and communications for Mt. Hood Meadows said his team was meeting at 9 a.m. Monday to discuss their opening plans. He said they’d send an update after the meeting.

On Sunday, Mt. Hood Meadows said it may launch the 2022-2023 season on Tuesday. The resort received five new inches of snow as of Sunday and expected to receive two more feet through Monday.

“The storm needs to produce tonight to give us enough snow and prep time to open Tuesday. We are actively snow harvesting through the night, building ramps at the bottoms and tops of our base area lifts. If the storm delivers Sunday evening we expect to run Buttercup, Easy Rider, the Ballroom Carpet and possibly the Daisy chairlift on Tuesday. We will confirm our opening plans Monday morning,” Tragethon said in a news release Sunday.

Mt. Hood SkiBowl has not yet said when it plans to open its lifts, but it did open its tubing hill for daytime tubing and cosmic tubing on Friday.

Cyber Monday deals lure in consumers amid high inflation

This year’s Cyber Monday comes amid a wider e-commerce slowdown affecting online retailers who saw a boost during the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW YORK — Days after flocking to stores on Black Friday, consumers are turning online for Cyber Monday to score more discounts on gifts and other items that have ballooned in price because of high inflation.

Cyber Monday is expected to remain the year’s biggest online shopping day and rake in up to $11.6 billion in sales, according to Adobe Analytics, which tracks transactions at over 85 of the top 100 U.S. online stores. That forecast represents a jump from the $10.7 billion consumers spent last year.

Adobe’s numbers are not adjusted for inflation, but it says demand is growing even when inflation is factored in. Some analysts have said top line numbers will be boosted by higher prices and the amount of items consumers purchase could remain unchanged — or even fall — compared to prior years. Profit margins are also expected to be tight for retailers offering deeper discounts to attract budget-conscious consumers and clear out their bloated inventories.

Shoppers spent a record $9.12 billion online on Black Friday, up 2.3% from last year, according to Adobe. E-commerce activity continued to be strong over the weekend, with $9.55 billion in online sales.

Salesforce, which also tracks spending, said their estimates showed online sales in the U.S. hit $15 billion on Friday and $17.2 billion over the weekend, with an average discount rate of 30% on products. Electronics, active wear, toys and health and beauty items were among those that provided a big boost, the two groups said.

Meanwhile, consumers who feared leaving their homes and embraced e-commerce during the pandemic are heading back to physical stores in greater numbers this year as normalcy returns. The National Retail Federation said its recent survey showed a 3% uptick in the number of Black Friday shoppers planning to go to stores. It expects 63.9 million consumers to shop online during Cyber Monday, compared to 77 million last year.

CONSUMERS ARE SPENDING CAUTIOUSLY

Mastercard SpendingPulse, which tracks spending across all types of payments including cash and credit card, said that overall sales on Black Friday rose 12% from the year-ago. Sales at physical stores rose 12%, while online sales were up 14%.

RetailNext, which captures sales and traffic via sensors, reported that store traffic rose 7% on Black Friday, while sales at physical stores improved 0.1% from a year ago. However, spending per customer dropped nearly 7% as cautious shoppers did more browsing than buying. Another company that tracks store traffic — Sensormatic Solutions— said store traffic was up 2.9% on Black Friday compared to a year ago.

“Shoppers are being more thoughtful, but they are going to more than a few retailers to be able to make a determination of what they are going to buy this year,” said Brian Field, Sensormatic’s global leader of retail consulting and analytics.

Overall, online spending has remained resilient in the past few weeks as eager shoppers buy more items on credit and embrace “buy now, pay later” services that lack interest charges but carry late fees.

In the first three weeks of November, online sales were essentially flat compared with last year, according to Adobe. It said the modest uptick shows consumers have a strong appetite for holiday shopping amid uncertainty about the economy.

Still, some major retailers are feeling a shift. Target, Macy’s and Kohl’s said this month they’ve seen a slowdown in consumer spending in the past few weeks. The exception was Walmart, which reported higher sales in its third quarter and raised its earnings outlook.

“We’re seeing that inflation is starting to really hit the wallet and that consumers are starting to amass more debt at this point,” said Guru Hariharan, founder and CEO of retail e-commerce management firm CommerceIQ, adding there’s more pressure on consumers to purchase cheaper alternatives.

This year’s Cyber Monday also comes amid a wider e-commerce slowdown affecting online retailers that saw a boom in sales during most of the COVID-19 pandemic. Amazon, for example, raked in record revenue but much of the demand has waned as the worst of the pandemic eased and consumers felt more comfortable shopping in stores.

To deal with the change, the company has been scaling back its warehouse expansion plans and is cutting costs by axing some of its projects. It’s also following in the steps of other tech companies and implementing mass layoffs in its corporate ranks. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the company will continue to cut jobs until early next year.

Shopify, another company that helps businesses set up e-commerce websites, laid off 10% of its staff this summer.

Crews rescue 2 from plane caught in power lines in Maryland

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (AP) — Two people were extricated from a small plane early Monday in Maryland, several hours after they crashed into power lines, causing widespread outages in the surrounding county.

Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Goldstein said the plane was secured to the tower at 12:16 a.m. and the first occupant was removed from the plane at 12:25 a.m. The second occupant was out at 12:36 a.m.

Goldstein did not say which of the men, identified by Maryland State Police as pilot Patrick Merkle, 65, of Washington, D.C., and passenger Jan Williams, 66, of Louisiana, were rescued first from the plane that was stuck about 100 feet (30 meters) above the ground.

He said both men suffered “serious injuries” from the crash and that hypothermia was also an issue. Both men were transported to local trauma centers with non-life threatening injuries, Goldstein said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that the single-engine plane, which had departed White Plains, New York, crashed into a power line tower near Montgomery County Airpark in Gaithersburg around 5:40 p.m. Sunday.

Pete Piringer, chief spokesperson for the Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service, had said on Twitter that the people on board were uninjured and that rescuers had been in contact with them. He had at one point said in a video message that three people were on the plane but later clarified that it was two.

Goldstein said that utility contractors will first work to ground the high-tension wires to make it safe for rescuers to work. Fire crews will then use bucket trucks or a crane to make the plane stable by chaining it or strapping it to the tower. After the plane is more stable, Goldstein said, rescuers will use the crane or bucket trucks to bring the two people down. He said rescuers are periodically contacting them by cellphone to check on them.

The FAA identified the plane as a Mooney M20J.

The video showed a small white plane positioned nose up near a power tower. A local television station’s live video showed the plane remained stuck in the transmission tower after 8 p.m.

The utility Pepco had reported that about 120,000 customers were without power in Montgomery County. At the time of the rescue, most of the power had been restored to the county, outside of the crash site. Goldstein said the next steps were to secure the plane, remove it and then the powerlines will be restrung and reconnected.

Piringer said that Montgomery County schools announced that schools will be closed on Monday.

The crash took place in Gaithersburg, a city of 69,000 people about 24 miles (39 kilometers) northwest of Washington, D.C.

The cause of the crash wasn’t immediately clear. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate what happened.

People at NE Portland sports bar stop armed robbery early Saturday morning

When officers arrived to an armed robbery at a Northeast Portland sports bar, people had already stopped it by pinning the suspect to the ground.

PORTLAND, Ore. — It’s hard to find a local business along Northeast Sandy Boulevard in the Parkrose neighborhood that hasn’t been impacted by theft or violence. It’s all part of a typical day at work for Alexis Carrillo, who manages Sandy Smoke Shop.

“There’s a lot of people coming to the store with knives and bats and stuff. I got to kick them out of the store while I’m here and who knows what happens when I’m not here at night,” Carrillo said.

It’s a valid concern, seeing as a would-be robber targeted Be Van Sports Bar across the street early Saturday morning just after 12:30 a.m.

Portland police said they responded to a reported robbery with a gun in the 10800 block of Northeast Sandy Boulevard at that time. When officers arrived, people had already stopped the robbery and pinned the suspect to the ground.

“I was shocked, but it’s not surprising,” said Carrillo. “They did what they had to do, you know — good thing there was people there to do that.”

It wasn’t immediately clear who subdued the would-be robber, whether they were patrons or staff at the sports bar.

Police arrested the suspect and took him to a nearby hospital, with a police spokesman saying that the suspect “clearly needed medical attention.”

Local business owners told KGW they are on high alert for crimes like these and store weapons behind the counter, keeping a close eye out for each other by sharing security camera footage.

“Yeah, that’s kind of how we roll,” said Carrillo. “It’s a little scary ’cause you never know what could happen — you just got to deal with it.”

At last check on Sunday, the suspect in the Be Van robbery attempt was still in the hospital and in police custody, facing a second-degree robbery charge.

Video shows Ducks' player throwing postgame punch after loss

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Oregon’s athletic administration said Sunday it is gathering information after video surfaced showing Ducks outside linebacker DJ Johnson striking a person in Oregon State gear on the field after Saturday’s game at Reser Stadium.

Johnson is seen punching the person from behind and then being restrained and led away by what appears to be two Oregon staff members.

“We are aware of a postgame exchange involving a member of our football team and a fan and are working to gather more information,” the Oregon athletic department said in a statement.

Oregon State came back from a 21-point deficit in the third quarter to beat the rival Ducks 38-34. The loss cost Oregon a spot in the Pac-12 championship game.

“We are (aware) of this matter and are confident that the Pac-12 Conference and the University of Oregon will investigate this matter and deal with it appropriately,” Oregon State spokesman Steve Clark said in a statement to The Associated Press.

Clark said the university did not know the identity of the person who was punched and hoped the person was not injured.

Clark said no complaint had been filed with the university’s police department as of Sunday afternoon.

The Pac-12 did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Portland businesses hope for a turnaround on 'Small Business Saturday'

The owner of Mimi’s Fresh Tees in downtown Portland wants people to come back to downtown for their shopping.

PORTLAND, Ore. — “Small Business Saturday” encourages people to shop at small local businesses — a sentiment that Portland business owners are encouraging after a rough couple of years.

Kamelah Adams, owner of Mimi’s Fresh Tees in downtown Portland, said she hopes people come back to downtown. She has a new temporary pop-up store on SW 10th Avenue and Morrison.

“It’s vital for people to come to downtown Portland — and if you don’t, you’re going to say ‘bye bye’ to a lot of unique small businesses,” Adams said.

Adams started Mimi’s Fresh Tees back in 2018. She makes T-shirts focused on social justice and female empowerment. She had a store in Old Town but said she had to move it because of crime in the area.

“We’re trying to spread a little love, light and hope to the downtown area because it’s been tough these past couple of years,” Adams said. “Shopping small means you’re directly supporting families who live in Portland.”

Soobien Oh was shopping around at Mimi’s Fresh Tees on Saturday. He said he makes it a priority to support small businesses.

“We want to make conscious choices about where we are spending money, and what better way to do it than spend it locally and with people we know are doing good things for our community,” Oh said.

The Japanese American Museum of Oregon on Northwest Flanders Street has a new pop-up shop with Japanese-inspired gifts and crafts.

“Most of them are made by Japanese and Japanese American artists that are here locally,” said Elissa Dingus, Director of Education Engagement.

Dee Tory is the owner of WUL in downtown Portland. It’s a gallery space with art and clothing. He’s an artist and a designer who also has a foundation that raises scholarship money for students.

“Small businesses can be niche markets that need to be supported in order to grow and become bigger and have a voice in what they’re existing for,” Tory said.
