Oregon State was close to achieving it.
The Beavers led for most of Saturday night’s game but lost 17-14 against No. 7 USC.
They proved they are capable of competing with some the most talented teams in the country.
Oregon State is one of the top 25 teams in the country, regardless of whether they win the votes.
And rebuild isn’t over.
The Beavers will continue to develop and acquire talent in order to remain competitive with top programs.
Jonathan Smith, Oregon State’s head coach, said that his team displayed “a lot of energy & desire throughout the game.” “Credit those guys in the other locker room to finish the game.”
What’s amazing is they lost by just three points despite an awful game by quarterback Chance Nolan.

Nolan completed 17 of his 29 passes for 167 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions.
You can’t give the ball away that many times to a bad team, let alone a top-10 team.
Although they lost, it was an accomplishment to be able to hang with the top-10 team for so long.
Smith had Beavers ready
Before the 2018 season, Smith was hired by the Beavers as their head coach.
Smith was at Oregon State in 2000, during which they were coconference champions in Pac-10. And finished No. 4. In the AP poll.
The Beavers concluded their season with a Fiesta Bowl victory against Notre Dame.
Smith knows how win games and had his players ready for the Trojans.
Smith and his team have done a fantastic job developing the talent they bring to the program.
A prime example is wide receiver Anthony Gould, who didn’t see much action in his first two seasons at Oregon State after graduating from West Salem.
Gould, who had 55 total yards Saturday, is now one of the Beavers’ primary weapons.
Smith took over a mess from Gary Andersen’s 2017 departure. The Beavers finished 1-11 that year, and they were 2-10 in Smith’s first season.
Oregon State now stands at 3-1 overall. They fought till the end against No. 7 in the country.
All losses are not the same.
It was a great night for the Beavers.
